Goals of the COE

Within the COE the information to address aspects needed for widespread LDES use will be provided. Specifically, dialogues, in-depth interviews and discussions with critical stakeholders and market focus groups, will be be undertaken to define needed functionalities and specifications according to various user requirements. This will establish critical end-user specifications necessary for understanding the use cases and comparisons of diverse LDES technologies.

The goals for these conversations are:

  • Development of protocols for uniform benchmarking across diverse technologies to ensure comparability under equivalent conditions
  • Techno-economic analysis to specify optimal long-duration battery characteristics for energy systems, implementing insights from the battery technology developments combined with the pilot scale learnings
  • Improvements of the manufacturability, scalability, sustainability, and safety of the developed battery technologies
  • Set of LDES functionality requirements defined by potential end users/stakeholders, collected via stakeholder workshops, interviews, focus groups, Dutch electricity market framework based on policy and regulatory analysis
  • Development of a network between industries and academia in The Netherlands, to build a know-how base for LDES, share results of the various pilots, and provide reports on i) value creation strategies, ii) the knowledge on best practices for grid- and industrial integration, iii) productive collaboration between existing national and international stakeholders and ecosystems, iv) effective dissemination strategies, v) provision of educational materials for BCC NL’s Human Capital Agenda.
